NEVER A DULL MOMENT
He’s taken America – and the world – on a roller-coaster ride. Here’s a look at Donald Trump’s controversial first year in office
WHEN he was sworn in as president of the United States he vowed he’d do things differently. And that’s a promise Donald Trump has definitely kept. His presidency isn’t like anything we’ve seen before – Twitter wars, speeches in which he makes up names of countries that don’t exist, allegations of election rigging, threats of impeachment and verbal brawls with international leaders that have taken the world a giant step closer to nuclear war.
We look back on Trump’s eventful first year.
REBELLION WITHIN HIS OWN RANKS
Hours after being sworn in as America’s 45th president, he signed an executive order to begin the process of dismantling the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
But he ran into problems when it came to light that the new American Health Care Act, which he planned to implement in its place, would see an estimated 24 million Americans losing health cover over the next decade.
In March, Trump suffered a humiliating defeat when he couldn’t even get enough votes from members of his own Republican Party to repeal Obamacare. In July another vote in Congress about the plan to scrap Obamacare was defeated by a slim majority. When it finally cleared congress it was defeated in the senate, once again thanks to votes from Republicans.
Now, having gone back to the drawing board, Trump looks set to finally get it right to repeal vast portions of Obamacare. But experts warn that in so doing he might set American healthcare back by decades.
