What to watch this week on the big & small screen
Musical biopic. With Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Michelle Williams. Director: Michael Gracey. 10-12PG PV.
Inspired by the life of circus owner Phineas Taylor “PT” Barnum, this musical extravaganza credits him – a poor tailor’s son who in late 19th-century America built a world of wonder – as the creator of show business.
Office worker Barnum ( Jackman) has laboured to make a life for his wife, Charity (Williams), and their two daughters. But after a career setback he’s forced to find a clever way to provide his family with the lifestyle he’s always promised them.
That’s when he has the inspired idea to put together a troupe of performers and oddities and create a world he proudly dubs a place where customers go for the pleasure of being hoodwinked. To achieve his dream he enlists the help of wealthy playwright Phillip Carlyle (Efron).
Although this is a far cry from a realistic documentary-style biopic as it mostly glosses over the complexities of the real Barnum’s life, it’s still a spectacular glimpse into the impresario’s innovation and business savvy. The contemporary songs – by La La Land’s Oscar-winning composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – and the period backdrop make this a wildly entertaining slice of musical theatre decadence from beginning to end.
If you won’t watch this flick for the outstanding cast, magnificent costumes or incredible music, see it simply to avoid feeling left out once Oscar season rolls around.
