THE LOST CITY OF Z
Biopic. This sweeping, old-fashioned epic looks at the life of English explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who becomes obsessed with searching for a lost civilisation in the Amazon after finding pottery shards during a 1906 expedition.
At first the big time-jumps between events makes it difficult to engage with the story. But Sienna Miller’s performance as Fawcett’s wife and Tom Holland’s as his eldest son are superb, while the nuanced Hunnam and Robert Pattinson as his second-in-command show they’re much more than teen heart-throbs.
Beautiful cinematography, an intelligent script – which focuses as much on Fawcett’s harrowing journeys as his family’s struggles – and a haunting, deeply moving finale, make this is worth seeing.

FUN MOM DINNER
Comedy. Four moms of preschoolers (Toni Collette, Molly Shannon, Bridget Everett and Katie Aselton), who don’t all get along, decide to have a fun dinner together and take the night off from their kids. The drunker they get the more chaos ensues.
Unfortunately not even the talented Collette (Muriel’s Wedding) and comedy stalwart Shannon (Bad Teacher) can save this flop – a watered-down copy of Bad Moms (2016) – with its weak storyline and contrived humour. The only bright spot is Everett, whose physical comedy skills deliver a few laughs.
