Dynamite duo
It was just a matter of time before they did a song together. After all, they have so much in common – CRAIG LUCAS and PAXTON FIELIES are both from Cape Town, both have amazing voices and each won a singing competition last year.
“I followed Paxton’s journey on Idols,” says Craig, who won The Voice SA in July. “I loved everything about her – her voice, her stage presence, everything. I wanted to work with her whether she won Idols or not.”
The duo recently released their single, Smother, originally a song off Craig’s debut album, Restless.
“I love the song and how raw it is. The emotion Craig brings to it is amazing,” 17-year-old Paxton says.
“It’s so rare that two people from neighbouring communities, Elsies River and Bishop Lavis, win two national singing competitions in the same year,” Craig (25) says. “We just had to do something together.”
We chatted to them about what could well be the first of many collaborations. What was it like working together? CRAIG: It was cool getting to see her work. Everybody has their own way of doing things so it’s always nice to learn a few tips and tricks from other artists. We don’t know each other very well yet, but we’re already so comfortable together. PAXTON: It was amazing – we have great chemistry. The shoot was quite something because we’re both awkward in front of the camera! What do you think of each other as artists? CRAIG: She’s unique – not many people can sing like her. I believe she has a lot of potential and brings something new to the local music scene. I’m very excited about her career. PAXTON: He’s an amazing artist. His creativity and work ethic really inspire me. What was the best part of this experience for you? CRAIG: Seeing how excited she is about music and her career just made me excited all over again. She’s so cool. And we just gel musically. PAXTON: Everything! I loved working with Craig.
