MALETSUNYANE FALLS, LESOTHO

-

This is one of Lesotho’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s 192m high and one of the waterfalls with the longest continuous drops in the southern hemisphere. The stream into which the waterfall drops runs into the Senqu River – the Sotho name for the Orange River.

The town nearest the waterfall is Semonkong, Sotho for “place of smoke”. This refers to the waterfall’s spray which looks like smoke.

Semonkong is about 130km from the Maseru border post with South Africa.

If you’re not afraid of heights you can abseil down the cliff next to the waterfall – it’s 204m from top to bottom and holds the Guinness World Record as the highest commercial (where you pay to do it) abseil. Tourists also mountainbike or ride ponies in the area, or walk the mountain trails – Lesotho is called the Mountain Kingdom for good reason!
