WHEN I was a little girl I thought all men had beards. My dad had one for as long as I could remember so it just never occurred to me there were men who didn’t have them.

Of course, as I grew older I realised many grown men were cleanshaven (as a kid I must have thought that theirs just hadn’t shown yet). And now many years later I see how divided opinions can be on the subject.

Some simply can’t bear them for various reasons – hygiene, scratchiness, hiding a hot guy’s face . . .

Others love them because they’re a style statement, protect bad skin, are low-maintenance or give a sense of identity in the same way a particular hairstyle does.

Guys, our feature on page 44 will give you some ideas if you’re new to beards or you’re toying with the idea of growing one. There are different styles and products to please newbies and experts alike.

And while you’re in our lifestyle section, circle which of the gifts, clothes or burgers you’d like your significant other and kids to get for you this Father’s Day.
