BORN TO LEAD

-

Eric Songwiqi, Siya’s primary school coach, says he always knew the youngster had the right attitude and leadership qualities. “Knowing he’ll become the first black African to captain the Springboks in a Test is an exuberant moment. It proves hard work, discipline and dedication pays,” he said. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus says Siya was chosen as captain simply because he’s the best man for the job. “I like him because he’s humble‚ he’s quiet and the way he’s playing isn’t flashy. With the breakdown work he’s doing in attack‚ the carries and cleanouts‚ he’s playing almost like a blindside flanker.” Former Springbok captain Jean de Villiers, one of Siya’s childhood idols, couldn’t agree more. “I think I’m fortunate. I’ve known Siya since he made his debut for the Stormers and I was his roommate the week before he made his debut for SA,” he said. “From day one I knew there was something special about him.
