MOPANE WORMS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
Let’s look at something you may be familiar with – the mopane worm. This delicacy is actually the larva of the emperor moth (Gonimbrasia belina) which becomes edible during its caterpillar phase. Mopane worms are also called madora, masonja, ohane and amacimbi. They’re enjoyed in Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
These caterpillars are most commonly found on or close to mopane trees. The entrails are removed and the rest of the caterpillar is cleaned and prepared in a sauce. But many people also enjoy mopane worms as sun-dried crunchy snacks. They’re an excellent source of protein for thousands of people. Have you ever eaten them?
