Books for young & old
By JACK JONES Illustrations: JACQUI TAYLOR STRUIK CHILDREN This charming children’s book tells the true story of a baby rhino who got separated from his mom.
We meet Chizi when he’s a week old and very sick. He’s taken home by national park manager Colin Saxon and the Zimbabwean family look after him and raise him to young adulthood, when he’s independent enough to live in the wild and make his own rhino family.
The story is informative and fun. Taylor’s illustrations not only depict the African bush in exquisite detail, but also provide a warm and amusing portrayal of what it’s like to live with one of the continent’s fiercest animals as a family pet.
This real-life Stuart Little tale is highly recommended and is a good choice if you’re looking for a suitable read for an adopted kid. Aimed at ages six to nine. – ALFIE STEYN
