DIY marble-look tabletop

- BY VANESSA HOLIES PICTURES: JACQUES STANDER

We show you how to give a coffee station a makeover with contact paper and a lick of paint

YOU’LL NEED

Wood filler Sandpaper (both Builders) 5 litres black paint Measuring tape 1 sheet selfadhesive contact paper (Game) Ruler Pencil Squeegee tool Carpet knife or scissors (Builders)

METHOD

Before you begin, fill any holes in the table with wood filler, then use sandpaper to smooth over.

Paint the table and leave to dry before covering the top.

STEP 1

Measure the width and length of the tabletop.

STEP 2

To determine how much paper you’ll need, measure how much of an overhang you’ll need, taking into account the thickness of the tabletop. Add this to the measurements in step 1. We provided 6cm all round. Rather leave too much than too little – you can trim away any excess.

STEP 3

Now you know the dimensions, use the gridlines on the back of the contact paper as a guide to cut it. Also mark on the gridlines where the overlap starts so you know where to place the paper when you start to stick it down.

STEP 4

Peel back a little of the backing paper from one corner. Don’t remove all the backing paper at once – rather peel and stick the contact paper down bit by bit to prevent bubbles from forming. Start sticking down the paper from the edge of one of the short sides of the table, making sure you’ve provided for the overhang.

STEP 5

Use a squeegee to get rid of air bubbles as you apply the paper from one edge to the other, covering the entire tabletop.

STEP 6

Cut a slit in the corner of the overhanging paper then use the squeegee tool to smooth the paper down and under the edges of the tabletop. Do this with all four corners.
