A COUNTRY HIDEAWAY OF THEIR OWN
When they need a breather from the hustle and bustle of London, Meghan and Harry have the perfect haven to run away to: York Cottage
As cosy as it might sound, the “cottage” is actually a stately manor on the grounds of Queen Elizabeth’s beloved Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England.
It’s understood the 92-year-old monarch gave the home to her grandson and his bride as a wedding gift as she did with Anmer Hall for Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge (both 36), in 2011.
Until now the ivy-walled York Cottage was used as holiday accommodation and as extra lodging for Sandringham staff, but it will now be the perfect retreat for the Sussexes during family events at Sandringham, where the royals often spend Christmas.
And, like Anmer Hall, the charming cottage – described by The Telegraph as “resembling three Merrie England pubs joined together” – will be the perfect place to set up home when they decide to start a family, as the Cambridges did when Prince George (5) started nursery school.
But if he couple are after time away from the limelight altogether, they have another option: the house they’ve rented in the Cotswolds. Not long after their wedding, the Sussexes signed a two-year lease on a home in Great Tew, a pretty village in Gloucestershire, although this was thought to be a temporary retreat until their Sandringham home was ready for them.
