I’M TIRED OF PEOPLE CALLING ME FAT

-

I’m very overweight and suffer from depression. Some of the medication I take makes me put on weight but I can’t do without it.

People tell me I’m very pretty but always add that I’d be stunning if I lost 20 to 30 kg. They say I have a stunning personality but that men don’t want to ask me out because I’m fat. I don’t know if they realise how much these words hurt.

I know some of them are trying to be kind but it doesn’t feel like kindness. Anonymous, email Being overweight is a complex issue and needs a multifaceted approach. The first thing you need to do is discuss it with your psychiatrist and ask to try another antidepressant or mood stabiliser that doesn’t have weight gain as a sideeffect. Then ask your psychiatrist to refer you to a dietician so you can have an eating plan drawn up that will help you lose weight.

If you really are tired of people calling you fat, do something about it. I’ve seen many patients suffering from depression who’ve been able to lose weight by changing their medication and getting help from a dietician.

Don’t be put off by the idea of seeing a dietician – it’s their job to design an eating strategy that suits your life and can help you to lose weight slowly and keep it off.

Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day – you have to commit to it and be disciplined. Also keep in mind that it’s better to lose weight slowly, over a few months, as this gives your body time to adapt.
