All about the Frozen sequel

Frozen fans will be delighted by the sequel which promises to tell the story of what happened the day after happily ever after

- BY DENNIS CAVERNELIS

IT’S one of the most successful movies of all time, a tale of sisterly love and inner strength that spawned a generation of young fans, as little girls embraced the premise that no woman needs a Prince Charming to rescue her – she’s very much capable of looking after herself. So it’s hardly a surprise that Disney has made a sequel to Frozen – and it’s one of the most hotly anticipated follow-up films of all time. Pre-bookings for Frozen 2’s opening weekend in the US outdid Toy Story 4, Incredibles 2 and The Lion King. “A $100 million [R1,5 billion] three-day opening weekend is a foregone conclusion,” media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said shortly before the 22 November opening in America.

Yes, Frozen fans, there’s a new adventure to grip and inspire you. Not to mention seven new songs to worm their way into your ears.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

“If Frozen was happily ever after, Frozen 2 is the day after happily ever after,” says co-director Jennifer Lee of the sequel, which is set three years after the first film. “We realised there were lingering questions. What would Anna do now that she has everything she’s ever wanted? And the biggest one: “Why was Elsa born with magical powers?”

In Frozen 2, Elsa hears a voice no one else can hear. She tries to block it out, but it won’t stop and shows her pieces of the past. It promises answers about why she’s the way she is and she’s compelled to find that voice. But the answers also threaten her kingdom and so, with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven in tow, Elsa embarks on a journey far north into the unknown to enchanted forests and dark seas beyond her kingdom of Arendelle.

Elsa has a magical horse, a water spirit called Nokk, capable of galloping across the surface of the ocean that, according to vulture.com, “makes Elsa’s silver hair . . . flutter aspirationally in the wind”.

“That’s the kind of sight you can imagine making a child’s heart explode with covetous delight.”
