HOW TO CREATE A SUMMARY DURING A TEST OR EXAM

-

Summaries that you’re expected to do in class look different from your own study summaries. However, there is a simple format for a formal sumary.

1 Carefully read the instructions. The format in which the summary should be done is provided in the instructions. Sometimes it’s in paragraph form or bullet points. The instructions may also require you to summarise only a part of the text. Make sure you understand the instructions very well. 2 Carefully read the text.

Just like with your own study summaries, you need to understand what you’re reading. Read with comprehension and avoid speed-reading. Ensure that you have enough time to read the text attentively at least twice.

During the second reading, underline the keywords (main idea or main sentence) in each paragraph. Usually, there’s one main idea in each paragraph. Sometimes there can be more than one fact in each paragraph. Most of the time the main idea or fact is at the beginning of the paragraph.

3 Now, write the keywords/ main ideas/main sentences below each other. It’s important that you rewrite the main ideas in your own words in full sentences. It’s a sentence that contains a verb that makes the fact meaningful.

The best way to keep your sentences as short as possible is to eliminate all descriptive words and figurative language. Make sure you don’t repeat any information.

4 Read your summary and correct any language and spelling errors.

5 Write down the number of words you’ve used at the bottom of your summary. It should be within the word limit provided in the instructions.
