I AM LONELY AND DEPRESSED

-

Q I’m 50, divorced, childless and I live on my own. I have a good job and earn good money but have suffered from depression my whole life. In fact, one of the reasons my ex-husband cited for getting divorced is that it is terrible to live with a depressed person.

I’ve had some treatment for depression but the tablets they give me don’t agree with me, and after a few days, I stop taking them. I’m very lonely. Although I love my home, it has become like a jail to me, and I get even more depressed on Friday when the weekend looms.

I can’t go on living like this because my life no longer holds any joy.

A You must work with a psychiatrist to find the suitable medication for your depression. The problem, however, is that you’ll have to give the medication a chance to start working. This means you won’t be able to see a difference in a day or two. Progress will take place over several weeks. Try to tolerate some of the side effects for a little longer so your psychiatrist can make sure that the medication is for you or not.

You also need to consult a psychologist to help you find a lifestyle that will make you less lonely. It’s no wonder you are feeling the way you do. Anyone who simply goes to work, comes home and has no fun during the weekend will start feeling depressed and lonely.

Remember, recovering from depression is a journey, and it’s okay to take small steps towards your healing.
