TRUSTY APPLIANCES

I’m writing to tell you how pleased I am with your Air Fryer magazine. YOU definitely understands the South African consumer public, our challenges (loadshedding, the economy, time constraints) and our preferences. I have the YOU Air Fryer recipe book 2 and know your recipes are to be trusted.

Some years ago, long before air fryers were popular, my daughter was given one by her motherinlaw – a very simple model. They only seem to have made chips in it, so I was surprised when they recently bought a new electronic one, and relegated the old one to the store room. I asked to try it out and immediately became a huge fan.

I’ve been using this secondhand air fryer with great success. What a boon to be able to cook so quickly when the power returns, the right amount of food for us and easy to cook, using the recipe leaflet supplied with the machine.

I had no idea how much more one could do but now that I have bought your excellent magazine I’ve tried many recipes and there are plenty to discover.

I had no idea one could do something in a casserole dish. I found two round ceramic and clay type bowls in the cupboard that fitted and made the best macaroni cheese ever in no time at all – about 10 minutes, very crisp.

I’m going to try baking as soon as I find the right containers.

Throughout one’s life many things are added to the household. Some break and others simply lose their lustre. During a recent loadshedding session, my dishwasher’s voice went silent.

In the year 1991, I became acquainted with the Plattelandse dorpie in which I would live for 20 years. On Wednesday afternoons, the office where I worked was closed so I could work with my parentsinlaw in their business. All my salary money thrown into a piggy bank. Disciplined, I saved until I had enough money to buy a dishwasher.

For me, I was the richest woman in town. Many nights she helped me out and washed the mountain of dishes. From the Karoo she moved to the city. Always willing and of great help.

Today she was carried out of the house, never to return. Isn’t there something we can do? Maybe someone can help? I tried.

It feels like I’m saying goodbye to a loved one. Something I worked very hard for. Today I salute my machine after 32 years. An era is over. We all have a time to come and a time to go.
