Your Baby & Toddler

AGAINST THE ODDS

- TANYA DE BEER

After our first son was born we thought that falling pregnant again would be easy – but only after seven years of trying did we get that positive pregnancy test. Sadly, eight weeks into the pregnancy the baby stopped growing and died. We were heartbroken and just couldn’t believe that this was happening after waiting so long for a baby. But we kept on trying and eight months after losing our little baby I was pregnant again. Our happiness was cut short when at eight weeks I experienced bleeding. After consulting the doctor I was put on bed rest, as he did not know what was causing the bleeding. At 11 weeks the bleeding started again and we thought we were going to lose this little baby too. After more bed rest all the problems stopped, and everything started going well until 31 weeks. During a baby care seminar it felt like I had wet myself, but when I went to the bathroom it was blood – and a lot of it. I called out for my husband that something was very wrong and the people at the seminar helped us to get to hospital. I was in preterm labour and it didn’t look good for our tiny baby. They managed to stop the labour and I spent a week in hospital before being sent home for more bed rest. We made it to full term before our baby boy was born, but he was immediately put into the NICU because he had fluid on his lungs. It was a miracle when we took our boy home after four days in the NICU. After a bout of neonatal jaundice at three days and an allergy scare at four months (he’s allergic to eggs, which he was exposed to through my breastmilk), we can finally say that our little boy is a happy and healthy eight-month-old today. We truly believe he is our angel sent to us from above.
