GETTING BABY TO LATCH

-

This is critical so baby gets enough milk and mom doesn’t suffer sore nipples. Some discomfort should be expected (your nipples have never done this before) but not agony. Hold your baby close to your body, and gently tickle his upper lip with your nipple until his mouth opens wide, like a yawn. Pull him in chin first, quick and close, so that he takes in as much of your breast as possible. If your baby is latched well his chest will be against your body (tummy-to-mummy), you’ll see no areola and his lips will be flared. You may see his ear wiggle slightly and his jaw move as he takes long, drawing sucks.
