POSTPARTUM DISCOMFORT – SOME TIPS TO EASE IT

-

■ Eat regular nutritious meals.

■ Sleep as often as you can.

■ Prioritise.

■ Soak your tender perineum in shallow warm water with coarse salt dissolved in it. Or make up a solution of witch hazel and a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil, and pour into a spray bottle. Spray your perineum, and pat dry after every trip to the loo! Even after caesarean.

■ Do your Kegels, no matter what kind of delivery you had. This will also work your deep core muscles.

■ Keep your vaginal area clean, and change your pads often.

■ Take whatever pain medication that has been prescribed.

■ Get help if you’re struggling with breastfeeding. Don’t wait until your breasts are so sore that you’re ready to give up.

■ When passing a stool, support your perineum with a pad, and eat soft foods until your toilet habits are back to normal.

■ When having sex for the first time, be sure to go slowly and to use extra lubrication if necessary. Many women are ready to go at six weeks, while others take longer before they feel comfortable.

■ Use ice packs or warm compresses to ease discomfort in the breasts or the perineal area. Cabbage leaves work well also!

■ Taking Arnica will assist in decreasing swelling and assist in the rapid healing of any trauma.

■ Relax, and put your feet up as often as you can.

■ Use your breathing to keep you calm when you feel you’re losing it.

■ Ask for help when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

■ Join a group where you can be with other mothers and babies.

■ Enjoy your baby.
