Road safety missive for big marathon

- Richard Springorum

MORE than 1 000 athletes will compete in the Tronox Marathon, Sanlam Half Marathon and UAC 10km and 5km run/walk on Sunday, 29 April, which will affect traffic flow.

This year the route for the marathon has changed and athletes will complete a double loop of 21.1km, which goes through residential areas and across major intersections in Empangeni.

There will be nine water tables, a number of marshals and traffic officers active along the designated routes aiming to keep all the athletes safe and facilitate smooth traffic flow.

Motorists should be alert and try and avoid these areas until midday if possible, or drive with extreme caution if they have to to use one of the following roads.

Athletes will start at Addison Park, head past the Life Empangeni Private Hospital and out towards the airport, before looping back onto the R34.

A portion of the R34 will be cordoned off until all athletes have passed.

Athletes will then head into Turnbull Street, go onto Pearce Crescent and Weightman Avenue before heading into President Swart.

They will turn into Cactus Drive, make their way along Palm Drive and head down to Durnford Road towards the Umfolozi Casino Resort.

From there they will run along Tanner Road towards the 5Five Ways Mall and branch into Rex Henderson and then into Higgs Road.

There will be a quick turn into Standish Lester and then into Paul Avenue before entering Warbler Street and making their way back to Addison Park.

There will also be security along the routes to protect the competitors.
