Bonus point win for eShowe

- Richard Springorum

ESHOWE Rugby Club took the drive up to Empangeni to put in a standout performance in their Stewart Shield clash against eSikhaleni last Friday evening at Mick Kelly Park.

The visitors were in mint form and ran in six tries in their 34-0 bonus point victory.

Eighthman Qualon Bond was the first to cross the chalk for the eShowe side after a strong line-out drive in the right hand corner (5-0).

It did not take long before eShowe increased their lead, this time through lock Phakamani Biyela, who was rewarded for his hard work in the tight five (10-0).

Scrumhalf Bonginkosi Maduna then dotted down under the sticks to record his side’s third try, which Gladwell Maduna converted to take the score to 17-0 at halftime.

eSikhaleni were on the defensive for most of the first half and did not see much of the ball.

When they did gain possession, they often squandered opportunities with poor decision-making.

eShowe improved on their first half performance by incorporating the forwards more into their loose play and counter-attacking from all areas of the field.

This resulted in a try by inside centre Harry Masinga, which Maduna converted (24-0).

Countless missed tackles and failing to shift defence by eSikhaleni resulted in two more tries for eShowe, which came courtesy of Xolani Mpungose and Siphesihle Ndwandwe.

eShowe will take on Empangeni 3 at eShowe on Friday evening at 8pm.
