Take a stride on the wild side

THE South Coast Striders running club is calling on all athletes and walkers to participat­e in the 2018 Hibiscus Challenge ultra-marathon on Tuesday, 1 May.

This Comrades qualifier is in its fourth year and still growing strong, having drawn more than 750 entries in 2017.

The route takes runners and walkers on a journey through the scenic KZN South Coast, exploring rural backroads, farmlands, along the beachfront with great sea views for inspiratio­n and up a few challengin­g hills to keep things interestin­g.

The time limit for the ultramarat­hon is 7 hours, however 6 hours will be needed to qualify for the Comrades.

All entrants who complete the 48km, 21km and 10km courses will receive medals.

Prize money totalling over

R49 000 and R10 000 worth of lucky draw prizes, are up for grabs on the day.

Ultramarat­hon runners must be 20 years or older, 21km runners must be a minimum age of 16 years and 10km runners 14 years of age on the day of the race.

Entries are open and can be found online on the South Coast Striders’ website (southcoast­striders.co.za) and Facebook page.

Online entries will be accepted until Wednesday. Late entrants can register the day before the race at Shelly Centre (10am-noon) and at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre (2-5pm).

On race day, entries will be allowed between 4.30-5.30am.

The route map is available on the South Coast Striders’ website and Facebook page, with start and finish at the Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre.
