Blood bank stock running dry
THE blood bank has a crisis on its hands.
Critical shortages in the province have left the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) desperately appealing to the public to donate blood as soon as possible.
SANBS has been grappling to boost its dwindling blood stocks, with just a one day supply currently available.
They fear they will not be able to meet patient demand unless donors come forward urgently.
According to SANBS Regional Marketing Manger Sifiso Khoza, a healthy blood stock in KZN needs to be 500 units of blood a day and it is only donors who can help alleviate the current crisis.
‘The blood group O is in demand as it is universal and can be transferable to all patients in need.
‘The situation is critical and lives are at stake as there there are many people in lifethreatening situations who require blood, right now.
‘It is the cancer patients who need regular blood supply, the mother giving birth, those who have been in accidents and anyone suffering complications during major surgery.
‘If you are able to donate blood, please do so as soon as you can.
‘We would like to thank you in advance for your donation: it’s not just about donating blood, it’s about saving people’s lives,’ said Khoza.
Incentives
SANBS hosts regular promotions and offers gifts to donors to thank them for their contributions.
On Tuesday (tomorrow) donors who give blood at the Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre will receive a free movie ticket.
Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre Supervisor, Sr Debbie Duff said donors can donate up to four times a year and can also qualify for a luxury picnic set.
‘As we head towards our winter months and with schools starting exams soon, we want to increase our stock levels well before this time.
‘For those youngsters visiting the mall, we encourage them to visit our centre and give blood as well.
‘Our appeal is also for local organisations, sports and youth clubs to help spread the word and promote the importance of giving blood.’
