Mini chess master makes her move
THE weather has not been kind to fishermen recently with warm seas and strong winds.
This along with the colder air temperatures has caused many to pack the tackle away and stay indoors with a cup of hot chocolate.
Those who have made the effort to go out and target the fish that are around have been reaping the rewards but reports have been scarce from the north coast.
This is more than likely owing to all the competitions occurring in the central and southern regions of the KZN coast over the last few weeks.
There were reports that sharks were being extremely greedy, but some fish are feeding well.
The main species coming out have been the tuna, dorado, snoek and couta and they have been hooked with lipped trolling lures or a slowly trolled dead or live bait.
Good catches have been reported from Cape Vidal to Maphelane and the bait of choice up there has been chokka.
This is mainly due to its versatility as a bait and the flexibility it offers the angler.
Double hook traces and circle hooks is the way to go when fishing in these areas as it will reduce the time you spend stuck in the rocks and mostly, you will land the fish you hook. RICHARDS Bay’s miniature chess champ, Paityn Reddy (7) has been selected to participate in the Commonwealth Chess Championships to be held in New Delhi, India from 25 June to 4 July.
The Grade 2 Richards Bay Primary School learner received her invitation a week ago and her family is fund-raising and collecting sponsorships to cover the costs for the trip.
Her mother, Kimona said they were excited and proud of Paityn’s achievements at her young age.
She was selected as the only U8 player from the King Cetshwayo District to compete at the South African Junior Chess Closed Championship in April and Paityn showed her skills and secured a spot in the top 10 and scooped first place in the girls category for KZN.
She won the Best Female Player award at the King Cetshwayo District Association’s 2017 rated tournament and claimed gold for her U10 team this year at the South African Junior Chess Championships Board 3.
To sharpen her skills, Paityn enjoys playing chess with her brother Keane and the duo compete in tournaments and championships together.
When she is not involved with chess activities, she enjoys reading, swimming and spending time with her pet dogs.
If anyone would like to sponsor or assist with donations for the trip, they can contact Kimona on 073 6744184.
