Swart dreams of pro rugby

- Richard Springorum

HEUWELLAND Primary School’s assistant sport organiser Carel Swart is packing huge muscle combined with a low body fat percentage, coupled with high fitness levels and slick sporting skills which have aided him in his rugby career.

The 24-yearold played eighthman for the Bulls U21 Currie Cup side and Bulls senior side in the Vodacom Cup in 2015.

He also represented the Bulls 7’s World Club side at sevens rugby tournaments in London (England) and Limerick (Ireland) in the same year. But after sustaining a serious neck injury, he was forced to return home to Empangeni where he played rugby for the Rhinos first team in 2016 and 2017 as an outside centre.

Swart made the move from Empangeni to Richards Bay Rugby Club halfway through the 2017 season and played premier league rugby with the Bay this year. He also represented the Livingball 7’s rugby team at a tournament on the South Coast, which they won.

‘I would love to get back into professional rugby, after being contracted at the Bulls in 2015,’ said Swart. ‘The plan is to finish up my mechanical engineering diploma through UNISA and complete a Civil Engineering diploma, before pursuing the professional rugby dream.’

The talented rugby player also plays cricket, indoor cricket, korfball, touch rugby and indoor netball.

He will join the Veldenvlei Korfball Club next year and his touch rugby team Bolt Master has won the McCarthy Toyota Empangeni Rugby Football Club Touch Rugby League twice.

When not slaying it out on any sporting pitch, Swart can be found rowing or hanging out at the beach with his friends.

Swart gyms six times a week, for two hours a day to stay in shape.

‘I focus on explosive and strength work and take protein supplements to aid my muscle growth.’
