MPL robbed at gunpoint

- Muzi Zincume

A MEMBER of the KZN Legislature was the victim of an armed robbery while driving in the Maholoholo area outside eSikhaleni towards the N2 on Wednesday night.

MPL Nondumiso Cele was heading to Durban in a Toyota Fortuner when she heard a funny noise coming from the back wheel.

According to Human Settlements and Public Works MEC Sipho KK Nkosi, Cele stopped the car to investigate the noise.

“She was accosted by gunmen who forced her back into the car and demanded money and cellphones. The suspects also took the car keys but failed to switch off the vehicle. They took two cellphones and a handbag before they ran into the bushes,” said Nkosi.

“As the car was still idling, Cele managed to drive to Mtunzini Toll Plaza where she asked for assistance.

We called her family in Clermont to bring the spare car keys. We appreciate the fast response by the police.”

Nkosi, who was himself a victim of cross-border crime earlier this year, said perpetrators should know they will never go unpunished.

In January, Nkosi was abducted and robbed of his two Toyota Hilux bakkies and cellphones from a house in Hluhluwe.

Speaking exclusively to the ZO, Nkosi said these crimes would end up forcing communities to confront the perpetrators.

A police source said a cellphone belonging to a suspect was tracked to an eSikhaleni home.

“On our arrival at the house, the suspect managed to escape, but we have all his details. He is involved in many robberies in that N2 vicinity,” he said.

A case of robbery was registered at Mtunzini SAPS, but no arrest has yet been made.
