Township school’s impressive step towards innovative technology

- Mbuso Kunene

IMIZIKAYIFANI Primary School in eSikhaleni became the latest township school to showcase its progress in the application of STEAM subjects meant for previously advantaged schools.

KZN Education MEC Mbali Frazer visited the school on Friday to witness its progress in the implementation of the subjects under the theme ‘preparing our learners... to influence quality education globally’.

STEAM subjects are science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

King Cetshwayo District now has 47 schools, including Imizikayifani, that are teaching coding and robotics to learners.

Addressing the parents, teachers and learners, Frazer said the brilliance of the science and technological innovations she has witnessed at the school was once thought to be impossible, especially for black schools.

“However, your intelligence and talent, dear learners, have shown us that it is indeed possible. “You have demonstrated that the possibilities of what you can achieve are limitless when one has the guidance and support of dedicated educators. I must say I am filled with hope and excitement for the future,” said Frazer.

She applauded the incredible achievements of young pupils in the fields of coding, robotics, science, technology and research.

“In this era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where technology takes centre stage, the department remains committed to intensifying our investment in subjects such as coding and robotics.

“Your dedication, hard work and passion for learning have brought you to this moment, and I do not doubt you will continue to reach even greater heights. The sky is not the limit for all of you,” she said, encouraging the learners.

Thandeka Ndlozi, Young Scientists Eskom Expo co-ordinator and coding and robotics teacher at Imizikayifani Primary School said, despite the lack of required resources for learning and teaching, they were determined to implement the programme at their school.

“Coding is an intense subject and requires learners to think critically. As a passionate teacher who wants to see change and believes in innovation, we implemented coding and robotics as per the circular issued by the president,” said Ndlozi.

She further urged private corporations to come on board and assist the school with the necessary tools that will enable them to be ready for university and the working world.

“These are our national assets, your kids, the future scientists and engineers. It is important, therefore, to donate resources towards their education and training,” said Ndlozi.
