Bell Equipment expands operations

- Gugu Myeni

HEAVY machinery manufacturer Bell Equipment has announced its expansion plans with the introduction of a new division, Bell Heavy Industries (BHI).

The new division is expected to provide project engineering and contract manufacturing.

“South Africa has seen a huge reduction in engineering companies, and, in response, we have strategically positioned our South African manufacturing facility to fill this void,” said

Bell group business development director Stephen Jones.

“The growth of Bell as a wellestablished mining, earthmoving and agriculture equipment manufacturer, both domestically and in terms of exports around the world, is a testament to the skills available and the quality of products we make in Richards Bay.

“We’re confident in our ability to expand into other industries and believe this will benefit not only the manufacturing sector but the whole country.”

In its interim financial results published in September for the year ended June 2023, Bell said there are a number of plans in the pipeline to mitigate challenges impacting its operations, including the plant in Richards Bay. This includes load-shedding and changes in the international market.

“The group will continue with its plan to produce more of the articulated dump trucks (ADT) product at its German facility, which is positioned closer to suppliers and the larger markets,” said Bell.

“This is part of a project to ensure the overall resilience and sustainability of the group. The critical need for simple logistics routes has been clearly demonstrated over the last few years.

“New and existing products less affected by these challenges will continue to be manufactured at the South African plant,” said the company.
