Zululand Hospice so deserves our support
On Thursday, the Zululand Observer was proud to host, and participate in, the annual Hospice Tree of Light service at our Empangeni premises.
Not to be confused with Christmas trees and lights, the event ‘shines a candle’ in memory of departed loved ones.
Most of these would have been cancer or other terminal illness patients, who had the distress of their final months or weeks alleviated by the tender ‘end of life’ care bestowed by Zululand Hospice caregivers.
It is not only the patients themselves who receive benefit; it is also their families, as Hospice takes over the care burden of loved ones who are emotionally, and in terms of nursing incapacity, unable to ensure the necessary management of the patient.
As well as easing the pain and suffering, Hospice care also contributes to the quality and length of life, at the same time mitigating against an unprepared for and more difficult bereavement process.
All this takes place in the safe and familiar haven of the patient’s home, as opposed to an impersonal hospital ward.
Thousands of families have over the years been blessed by the palliative care given by Zululand Hospice staff, who treat every patient as their own flesh and blood.
Remarkably, theirs is not a ministry of doom and gloom, but a positive one as they find joy and fulfilment in serving their fellow man.
To do the indispensable work they do, Hospice relies on public and business support in the form of donations, as well as fundraisers such as the Tree of Light.
Each contribution received assists them to continue providing their vital services to our communities.
Whether or not you have personally made use of the services of Zululand Hospice, this is one of the important service organisations at the heart of ensuring the community’s physical, medical, emotional, social and psychological support.
Many have testified to the selfless treatment they and their families have received from this amazing group, who are more than worthy of your prayers as well as any financial assistance you may be able to give.
Any tangible support you can give to an organisation this region simply cannot do without, will be warmly welcomed.
