Andile hits matric target

- Conelia Harry

FOR Richards Bay High School matric achiever Andile Ntenga, sacrifices made by his family gave him the extra advantage to go after his goal and attain top marks.

The 18 year old, who achieved six distinctions - maths, life sciences, physical science , accounting, life orientation and Afrikaans - said, while he has maintained good grades over the years, he stepped out of his comfort zone, reached out for help from his peers, and enlisted the services of a tutor.

Andile, who was also the school's headboy, maintained his leadership roles and academics while his sport took a back seat to allow more time to focus on his studies.

''Even though my family could not really afford the extra costs of a tutor, they went the extra mile to accommodate me and I am so grateful," he said.

"While I always believed my method of studying was the best and I did not need help, my matric year was the first time I reached out and it made such a difference.

"To the Class of 2024, I encourage you not to put too much pressure on yourselves to perform.

"As much as you want to be disciplined, you must remain kind to yourself as mistakes will happen and you should not beat yourself up over them."

Hailing from the township of eSikhaleni, Andile said youngsters should never allow their circumstances to direct the trajectory of their lives, or make excuses not to succeed as anything is possible.

Principal Herman Muller said

the school is extremely proud of Andile's achievements.

"We have known him to be a dedicated all-rounder and as the headboy, he excelled with six distinctions and has applied to study actuarial sciences. We wish him all the best for the future."
