Top matric trio rise together

- Wellington Makwakwa

AFTER several years of not producing learners with seven distinctions, Khula High School in eSikhaleni has bounced back with a top trio.

Focused friends Siyamthanda Mhlongo (18), Senamile Dlamini (17) and Nothani Goba (17) have put the school on the map once again, with each learner achieving seven distinctions.

Despite many challenges which included load-shedding and consequent time management, this trio worked together to achieve top results.

Senamile from eSikhaleni obtained top marks in English, IsiZulu, life orientation, physical science, maths, life science and accounting.

“I had my own timetable and I sometimes had problems with time management. But we worked together and supported each other throughout the year," said Senamile, who is getting ready to go to the University of Cape Town (UCT) to study medicine.

Fellow classmate and friend Siyamthanda also represented the school well, with seven distinctions in English, IsiZulu, life orientation, physical science, agricultural science, maths and life science.

“I was addicted to my books from January and it helped me. I’m grateful to have had a close friend like Senamile because she inspired me and we helped each other.

“During the year I was working towards getting good results, but when I first saw them I was overwhelmed and surprised,” said Mhlongo, who will study medicine at Wits.

Nothani from Dube Village completes the winning trio with distinctions in English, IsiZulu, life orientation, physical science,

maths, geography and life science.

He told the ZO that even though he had to study until 2am every day, it was worth it when he saw his grandmother's excitement.

“I was with her during the year because my parents live far from home. I’m grateful for her support, as well as that of my parents and teachers. I’m excited for the next chapter,” he said.

This young lad will be studying astrophysics at UCT.
