Boy Genius sets sights on pharmaceutical studies

- Mbuso Kunene

DESPITE falling victim to a burglary at the beginning of his final matric exams, Asanda Genius Buthelezi was not deterred.

The burglary at his rental residence forced Asanda to take two buses from eSikhaleni to Amangwe High School in Matshana and back every day, vastly limiting his study time.

Fiercely determined, Asanda lived up to his middle name and walked away with 6 NSC (National Senior Certificate) distinctions.

A humble Asanda attributes his achievement to the dedication and support the learners received from the teachers at his school.

“I want to thank myself first, and my teachers, family and schoolmates for their support. The burglary at the start of my exams I took as a test and in a positive light, and went on to write my examinations and achieve these results,” said Asanda.

Advising the 2024 cohort at Amangwe High School, Asanda said they must first fix their relationship with God.

“Do not overwork yourselves, but do work hard and be relentless with your studies,” he said.

His mother, Zamashenge could not find words to describe the joy her son has brought to her life.

Having to raise her son alone and being unemployed was most challenging, she said.

“He was very dedicated and I had to

worry only about giving him my support throughout his studies. I wish to thank the teachers at his school, who give their best in assisting our children,” she said.

Asanda has been provisionally given an offer to study a pharmacy degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's College of Health Sciences, and is set to register next week.
