‘Hands off my mate’ anti-bullying campaign
SCHOOL bullying was the focus of the 'Hands off my mate' campaign rolled out in KwaDlangewa on Wednesday.
The campaign started with a programme at Vulindlela Community Hall led by NPOs, Linzwa Foundation and Isibani Development Partners.
Various speakers addressed hundreds of pupils from Iniwe Primary and Khandisa Primary schools about what constitutes bullying and its destructive results.
"Bullying remains a huge problem in our country, and by the look of things, if nothing is done by 2030 it will become a pandemic.
"This is the reason we decided to start a roadshow to teach kids about bullying through this campaign," said Lindiwe Dube of Linzwa Foundation.
Pupils actively engaged in discussions with representatives
from LifeLine Zululand, SAPS, and more.
"I am thrilled to see the positive impact it has had.
“The pupils were listening and showed a genuine willingness to create a safe environment.
“It was rewarding to witness their increased understanding of bullying and their newfound confidence in standing up against it," said Lindiwe
Shongwe of Isibani.
Khandisa Primary School principal Mr Ntuli also welcomed the campaign, saying it promotes unity and helps to curb the growing trend.
"Children are very delicate creatures and they need special care. Bullying affects us as a school and a society because these children drop out and engage into bad behaviour that
adds to community ills," said Ntuli.
In response to the day, Abongwe Thusi (12) said the programme was an 'eye opener'.
"I learned that it's important to treat everyone with kindness and respect, and to stand up against bullying. I feel more confident now in knowing how to help others and create a safe environment at school."
