Minister calls for active school bodies
“SCHOOLS with high SGB [School Governing Body] participation report an average 20% higher pass rate than those with lower engagement.”
This was one of the points shared by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga during the media campaign launch of the 2024 SGB elections, scheduled for this month. Elected every three years, SGBs play a role in academic performance, pupil well-being and community engagement. “Incidents of vandalism and truancy decrease significantly in schools with active governing bodies,” said Motshekga.
“SGBs are the backbone of our school communities. They ensure our schools are not merely institutions of learning but beacons of hope, character and community spirit.
“Their impact is profound and far-reaching, with roles encompassing financial management, policy formulation and staff appointment.”
She said the department is firmly committed to conducting the elections with unwavering integrity.
“We invite all eligible stakeholders – parents, teachers, non-teaching staff, learners [high school] and community members – to participate and have their say.
“Through these elections, we can influence policies and decisions that will guide our educational landscape for years to come,” explained Motshekga.
“Diversity is more than just a buzzword; it's the cornerstone of a thriving society. SGBs should reflect this vibrant tapestry, ensuring no voice is left unheard. Through this inclusivity, we can craft a comprehensive approach to basic education that leaves no child behind,” she said.
