KZN Education MEC Mbali

Frazer inspected various schools in uMkhanyakude District as part of Operation Siyahlola.

Frazer visited Inkosi Zwelakhe Ngwane Secondary School last Friday, accompanied by Human Settlements and Public Works MEC Sipho Nkosi.

The MECs later joined KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube at Human Rights Day celebrations in Hluhluwe.

Both MECs received reports about this newly-built school, which was constructed in partnership with the Africa Foundation.

The school started operating in 2020 with only Grade 8 learners.

It welcomed its first Grade 12 class this year, and educators told the MECs they are working hard towards a 100% pass rate.

Frazer committed to addressing the challenges that were raised by the school principal. These include water supply problems and fencing of the school.

Frazer also used the opportunity to motivate the matrics, who were at school for holiday study sessions.

"Your parents deserve to be happy. You must work hard for your future; everyone who is successful today worked very hard," said Frazer.

The department said only phase 1 is complete at the school, and priorities for the next phase include a security guard room, fencing, vehicle parking, as well as a science lab.

Frazer then proceeded to Mduku High School, which is an old school and is in the plans of the Department of Education for reconstruction.

The department said, among issues raised at the school was a concern about the 44-year-old dilapidated infrastructure and overcrowding owing to a high rate of enrolment.

The department said mobile classrooms have been delivered to ensure that, while waiting for the completion of the new school, teaching and learning continue without any challenges.

Despite the reported challenges, the department said the school has been improving in its National Senior Certificate results for the last three years, and obtained 96.3% last year.
