- Larry Bentley

THE lives of 30 co-operative members should now change for the better after a joint partnership between Tongaat Hulett and the South African Research Institute (SASRI) granted them a fully paid three-week training course in sugar cane planting worth more than R250 000.

Trainees will receive a junior certificate in sugar cane agriculture from SASRI.

Tongaat Hulett Socio-Economic Development Manager, Nkonzo Mhlongo, said the company regards the sustainability of the cooperatives as very important.

The support of the 30 cooperative members will ensure that sugar cane projects have individuals involved with a sound understanding of sugar cane agriculture.’

The training course offers valuable industry experience relating to the type of soils and fertilizers needed for the different methods of planting, knowledge on harvesting and irrigation, and other environmental management aspects of operating a farm or piece of land.
