Formation of the perfect storm
It is becoming urgent that South Africa’s unemployment problem is addressed decisively.
While politicians spend their energy on pre-election opportunistic land grabs, party in-fighting, smear campaigns and the like, they only pay lip service to the unemployment crisis.
Make no mistake, the simmering frustrations of the disenfranchised jobless generation are fast reaching boiling point and will prove to be the biggest threat to our stability in time to come.
All the little vegetable gardens and fruit and crafts markets, as well as parttime piece job opportunities offered by government infrastructure so proudly punted by the spin doctors in the media, will have absolutely no impact in warding off the big storm that is coming.
What is needed is for national and provincial governments to focus solely on growing the country’s macro economy and fast.
A vibrant economy is the only effective way in which employment will be created.
And a very good start will be to recover the many billions the ruling party has squandered through fraudulent deals and tender corruption, and to become proactive in addressing community grievances so a stop can be put to the daily violent protests throughout the country which severely impact on economic activity.
Only time will tell whether President Ramaphosa will indeed, prove to be Moses leading his flock to the promised land. AARON
