DA against land expropriation without compensation
DA KZN leader Zwakele Mncwango says individuals must own land, not the State.
Speaking at the Democratic Alliance (DA) public meeting in Meerensee on Tuesday, Mncwango said, ‘While we must address the important issue of land, it must not divide us.
‘People often question what the DA’s stance is on the land issue. The DA supports land reform and restitution, but we are against expropriation without compensation.
‘We believe policies can address this issue adequately. We support the notion that individuals must be able to own land regardless of race.’
He said many people are willing to redress the imbalances of the past, but engagement is key.
‘We need to face real issues but be careful not to divide the country in the process.
‘Everyone wants a proper healthcare system, we all want economic freedom, safety and security in our communities, but these issues must unite us.’
Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga said the party wants people to live together and ‘move beyond racial politics’.
‘We want people to vote for a party because it is delivering services, not because it represents a certain race,’ he said.
He said his strategy has always been to stabilise, revitalise and improve service delivery.
‘Tshwane is currently the second best performing metro in the country, coming off a R2-billion deficit.’
Questioned by a community member on corruption, Msimanga said ‘corruption steals from the poor’.
‘Money that should be used to put infrastructure in place and ensure service delivery, goes into the pockets of people who do not deserve it.
‘We are not willing to entertain corruption or maladministration.’
He said the current generation must ensure a country alive with opportunity is handed over to the next generation.
‘If we are not going to make South Africa work, most of us have nowhere else to go. There is no other country south, this is it. We have to make it work,’ he said.
