SADTU told to hold government accountable
TEACHER unions have a critical role to play in fulfilling the government’s mission of ensuring the doors of learning are open to all.
Speaking at the opening of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) North Coast Region’s second triennial general meeting in Empangeni at the weekend, ANC Musa Dladla Regional Chairperson Mduduzi Mhlongo said unions such as SADTU had an obligation to fight against corruption and protect children at all costs.
‘We need teacher unions who will hold the government accountable where necessary.
‘One of the questions we need to ask ourselves as the ruling party is whether we are still leading society in relation to protecting public facilities such as schools. If we continue destroying our schools, then we are destroying our future.
‘The nature of SADTU as a revolutionary union compels you to maximise your activism and champion education for the benefit of society.
‘In SADTU our children’s future is guaranteed.’
Mhlongo also announced that the City of uMhlathuze was in the process of building a library in KwaDlangezwa and will continue offering registration fee assistance to students who want to further their studies at various institutions of learning.
The following officials were elected: Vee Shandu (Chairperson), Sikhumbuzo Ntshangase (Deputy Chairperson), Makhayandile Madikane (Secretary), Hlengiwe Mchunu (Deputy Secretary), Sam Ntuli (Treasurer), Bongi Mabaso (Education Convener), Nonto Dube (Gender Convener) and Mbali Ngema (Sports, Arts and Culture Convener).
