TWO schools have been chosen to represent the King Cetshwayo District at this year’s provincial Youth Citizens Action Programme (Y-CAP) competition.

Empangeni Preparatory School was selected in the primary schools category for their hygiene in schools project, while Qhakaza High School in Dlangezwa was chosen in the high school category for their project on bringing awareness about homosexuality to schools.

The provincial competition will take place in Durban on 8 and 9 June.

District schools selected at the provincial competition next month will represent KZN at national level.

Y-CAP, founded by non-profit organisation Empowervate, is a competition-based programme in which learners from different schools across the country participate by creating projects ‘to improve a particular problem they’ve identified in their schools or communities’.

Learners have previously completed projects on water saving, cyber bullying and substance abuse.

‘Participating in the Y-CAP programme assists in creating a team of proactive learners in the school who are positive role models for other learners.

‘The added benefit is the prize money at national level for the Y-CAP team to expand their project or start a new one,’ the organisation says.
