Tronox contract extension to benefit communities

- Gugu Myeni

AS part of empowering local businesses and communities, Tronox KZN Sands has announced the extension of its contract with Amabutu Logistics (Pty) Ltd.

The contract is for the transportation of its heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) and slimes between the Fairbreeze Mine and the central processing complex plant, and further transport of the final product to the Port of Richards Bay’s Grindrod Bulk Terminal.

The company was founded on the basis of Tronox’s commitment to develop communities in which it operates, including Dube, Macambini, Mkhwanazi, Nzuza, Somopho and Ogagwini. A consortium of local business people also became involved.

‘The success of Amabutu Logistics has demonstrated that with the correct leadership and active community involvement, a lot can be achieved by these community businesses in mainstream economic activity,’ said Tronox South Africa Managing Director, Mpho Mothoa.

Amabutu Logistics has over the past six years created employment opportunities, supplier development programmes, as well as offering bursaries for learners from the participating communities and providing school uniforms to the needy.

The business has created more than 90 jobs for men and women from the local communities, while 13 people from the six communities have successfully completed Code 14 driver-training programmes and are now employed by Amabutu and the King Cetshwayo Municipality.

According to Sam Mthembu, Amabutu Logistics CEO, the extension of the contract with Tronox will allow for two new positions to be created in the Marketing and Corporate Social Investment (CSI) departments.

‘These roles are earmarked for black women from the local communities.

‘The six-year extension will see a further estimated investment of R9.2-million towards community upliftment programmes.

‘Everyone must benefit from this transaction. The funds invested back into our communities will ensure that many of our people will be empowered,’ said Mthembu.
