Breaking barriers in the tuck shop sector
BRIDGING the gap in South African-owned businesses, Izethembiso Foundation has launched a new division to help grow small entrepreneurs.
Ayanda Mabaso and Sbonelo Ngcobo are pioneers of the South African tuck shop Movement which aims to give equal opportunity to South African-owned tuck shops and equip business owners with skills necessary for business management.
‘These tuck shop owners face several challenges and injustices within the industry. Some fail because they do not have the basic skill set to manage a business,’ said Mabaso.
‘Our movement acts as a shield to protect these owners from being exploited when buying stock, or closing shop owing to running at a loss.’
Eighteen tuck shops are registered on the movement's database. One member, Khumbu Manzini has been running her business, Zungu tuck shop in uMhlathuze for over eight years.
‘It has not been easy to start up or sustain my business,’ she said. ‘But I persevered through the challenges and Satmo has played a big role in sustaining my business and moving it forward.’
Through this programme, Satmo has been able to install digital tills in the tuck shops, Manzini being one of the beneficiaries.
‘We installed the tills to ensure stock management runs smoothly and efficiently, decreasing mistakes and ensuring controlled stock buying.’
Satmo is holding a free-ofcharge workshop on 2 June at Amble Inn in Empangeni.
Would-be and existing tuck shop owners are welcome to attend.
‘We want to create a clear and fair system that will allow South African tuck shop owners a chance to be successful business owners,’ said Ngcobo.
