Beauty and brains – a winning combination

- Wellington Makwakwa

She is not only young and beautiful, but has brains, too. Sisanda Mkhabela is not only one of the finalists for the prestigious Miss Modish Ladies South Africa under the Indoni Yethu Culture initiative, but she already has plans to change the industry.

This young model from Mzingazi, outside Richards Bay said she entered the competition because it is about being an exceptional thinker and innovator.

‘It continues to teach me to embrace other cultures and to appreciate the diversity which comes with being South African, including being able to tolerate and understand our differences,’ she explained.

Sisanda began modelling in 2017 as part of trying to build her self-esteem, and never looked back. Since then she has won titles such as Miss KwaMashu Ward 104, and entered four competitions in Durban, eSikhaleni, Mzingazi and KwaMthethwa.

She was overall winner for Miss Face of Mzingazi 2021.

‘I love modelling because it has taught me to accept others as they are.

‘It has improved my self-esteem and has saved me from the negativity affecting the youth, such as drugs, teenage pregnancy and other irresponsible behaviour,’ she said.

But winning the title will just be the beginning for this determined model. Her aim is to change the modelling world and make it benefit models more.

‘As young models, we have to pay for everything. When we enter pageants, we are expected to pay.

‘Payment is always required, even when you want to be part of a fashion show. How are we supposed to build careers? ‘Modelling has to work for us, and be just like any other career. I have not yet heard of another career where you pay for everything, only us.

‘I would like to launch a platform to deal with such issues and more. My message to all young girls who are enthusiastic and dedicated to modelling is this: perseverance is the mother of all successes, and they must never give up,’ she said.

As part of her journey to the finals, Sisanda is spearheading a community project and needs help.

Those willing and able to support and sponsor can donate any items, such as clothes or non-perishable foods.

All goods will be donated to those in need. For more information, contact Sisanda on 072 6725861.
