Cyclists gear up for Zini MTB Race in the Shade

- Mluleki Mdletshe

THE Mtunzini Mountain Bike Race, known as the Zini Race in the Shade is back and this year’s competition promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Powered by Tronox, this exciting and popular event, which attracts hundreds of bike riders from across the province, is now in its 26th year and will be held on Sunday, 5 June.

Starting from 7.15am, cyclists will choose from three different routes, which include a 55km, 25km and 10km ride, as well as a 10km trail run.

The rugged trail run and 10km mountain bike fun ride will head through the Zini River Estate and exit out onto the new parkrun trail recently cut and designed by the cycling club members.

This course winds its way through the coastal forest over a number of bridges.

In previous years, the route was

confined to the northern sections of Mtunzini, owing to logging in the southern section.

This year’s route will take riders through the scenic trails of Zini River Estate and onto the pristine forest trails for which Mtunzini is renowned, before tackling the 60m floating bridge over the uMlalazi river and heading south.

Next is through the Raffia Palms Monument boardwalk and out into the Twin Streams Conservancy area, over the new suspension bridge and onto new sections of a single track before coming through the uMlalazi Conservancy area.

This fundraising event has been enormously beneficial for the Mtunzini community, with the main recipients being Mtunzini Round Table and Mtunzini Primary School.

Registration can be done online at ROAG or MSEM, on the Saturday afternoon at Mtunzini Country Club, or on the Sunday morning at 5.30am
