Active edition added to EcoSport range

- Val van der Walt

FORD SA has introduced a new EcoSport called the 'Active'. This is likely the last special version of this compact SUV we will see as the EcoSport is nearing the end of its run.

The Indian-made EcoSport is scheduled to be discontinued this year, with Ford having no plans to pin the badge on another vehicle at this stage.

But what a run it was for the EcoSport, especially here in SA where it dominated the compact SUV segment for so long.

The car just ticked all the right boxes and still does, making it one of the most practical and best-looking small SUVs on the market.

Details

The EcoSport Active is based on the mid-spec EcoSport Trend automatic and is therefore powered by Ford’s familiar 1.0 litre, three-cylinder petrol engine offering 92kW and 170Nm of torque paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Visually, the EcoSport Active differs from the Trend by sporting a more rugged exterior appearance thanks to additional black plastic wheel-arch cladding, while the grille and the headlight and foglamp bezels are finished in black, as are the front and rear skirts.

The EcoSport 1.0 Active is further differentiated by its black-painted roof (with black roof rails), black mirror caps and black 17-inch alloy wheels.

Buyers can choose from four body colours, including Frozen White, Luxe Yellow, Solar Silver and Magnetic Dark

Grey. Inside, there's leather upholstery with Active badging, as well as a multifunctional, leather-trimmed steering wheel.

An 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is included, and offers both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality.

In terms of safety, the EcoSport Active offers seven airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control and hill launch assist.

Pricing

Right now, Ford SA is selling the EcoSport 1.0T Active AT for R393 700, but that might change soon as our currency fluctuates, so don't waste time if you want one. Ownership peace of mind comes in the form of a four-year/120 000km warranty.

As for the service plan, Ford unbundled its service plans from its vehicles' retail prices last year, so that's going to be an optional extra.

Buyers can choose between a four-year/60 000km service plan and an eight-year/135 000km plan.
