Youth are serious agents of change

-

One of the wonderful qualities of youth is that they are not bound by tradition and stereotypes; their bright minds are always looking for new and better ways of doing things.

Nor have they yet become disillusioned or disenchanted with life – they are by nature optimistic and idealistic.

Mental alertness plus physical strength plus confidence and creativity are wonderful assets they bring to the nation’s human resources.

The issues facing young people today are perhaps different to those that were faced on 16 June during the Soweto uprising, the origin of this public holiday day of remembrance.

But the qualities of character – the bravery and nerve it took to face that daunting situation – are exactly the same requirements our country needs today.

We need activists for social change…and activists should not be directly equated with militants.

The strategies, tools and weapons required to fight today’s ills are intellectual and spiritual, rather than physical.

Social responsibility is the driver for youth-led change, and our young people who are techno-savvy have the resources to fight those things that prevent our world from being a better, more inclusive place.

Using avenues such the arts, religion, education, sport and even politics, through personal involvement as well as the vast array of social media and online platforms, their voices can ring loud and clear.

Through volunteerism, NPO and NGO involvement, they can address the many physical and social issues that stand in the way of progress and happiness.

From the environment to Aids, GBV, racialism and blessers, today’s young people can raise great leaders and dedicated followers who will shine the path to the future.

Young people should not be intimidated by the criticisms of the older generation and should rather tap into their wisdom and experience.

By the same token, the more mature citizens should not be intimidated by the energy and sometimes over-enthusiasm and volatility of the young.

We can give the best of both worlds to our land.
