Bay yoga demonstration marks new record
RICHARDS Bay was the backdrop for the record breaking 'first yoga performance on a floating platform' on Saturday when the Sivananda World Peace Foundation hosted its 8th International Yoga Day at the Zululand Yacht Club.
The momentous occasion was certified by the Amazing Olympia World Records after 35 people completed an hour-anda-half of common yoga protocol on a floating platform, with all necessary safety requirements.
In total, the Youth Day function attracted 350 participants, with thousands tuning in from around the globe via live stream.
Foundation founder, Prince Ishwar Ramlutchman Mabheka Zulu, said they were delighted with the achievement, which promoted healthy living and social cohesion.
He was grateful for the support received from the National Sea Rescue Institute, Zululand Yacht Club, Zululand Multi Sport
Club, 1st Richards Bay Sea Scouts and Rob Banwell.
'All cultures, ethic groups and communities were represented and intertwined with our theme, 'Yoga for Health, Wellness and Humanity'.
'This set the pace for our Durban event on Sunday with over 2 200 people in attendance and supported by the Department of Health,' said Ramlutchman.
Commending the Foundation on its achievement was Finance MEC Nomusa
Dube-Ncube, who pledged the department's support in promoting yoga in communities.
'Because of its health benefits, yoga is not meant only for those who practise a certain religion. It is fulfilling and keeps us content,' said Dube-Ncube.
'We acknowledge the work of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation in building schools, erecting monuments, building halls, creating oneness among the people and promoting yoga in schools and rural communities.'
