Pink trees for a worthy cause
ACROSS Zululand, trees are turning pink this October as residents support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
CANSA Richards Bay calls on businesses, schools, organisations and community members to support the Pink Trees for Pauline campaign by wrapping a tree in pink this month.
The initiative was founded in 2012, and is an NPO that strives to promote quality of life during and after cancer.
The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) is a partner in the project and encourages communities to support the cause which raises funds to assist cancer patients with access to treatment.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is commemorated every October, so this is the time to show support.
Anyone can get involved, by purchasing the signature pink material from a local Cansa branch, as well as colourful head wraps to show solidarity.
Cansa Richards Bay representative Michelle Kunene said there are many ways community members can get involved in supporting fundraising initiatives and help make a difference in the lives of cancer patients, ensuring quality of life both during and after treatment.
"We invite community members to visit our centre or make contact to find out how they can get involved in supporting our programmes and campaigns," said Kunene.
Leading the way, Cansa Richards Bay has wrapped the tree in front of their premises in pink, and schools and businesses have followed suit.
The Zululand Observer joined in the challenge, draping one of its trees at the Baines Road office in pink.
People are also encouraged to go for breast cancer screening and to commit to regular self-examinations to look for signs or symptoms of cancer.
