Cancer survivors share their stories

- Conelia Harry

INSPIRATIONAL stories about personal journeys of overcoming cancer creates much-needed awareness about the disease.

Local cancer survivors Marnique Venter and Sandra Reddy bravely spoke at the Richards Bay CANSA Centre's Cuppa for CANSA event on Saturday.

These stories gave CANSA caregivers, cancer warriors, community members, and cancer patients strength and hope.

In 2006, Marnique was diagnosed with medulloblastoma – the most common pediatric malignant primary brain tumor. Despite being diagnosed with this life-threatening cancer, a fierce 19-month battle of operations, chemotherapy and radiations eventually saw her survive.

Marnique found spiritual and physical strength in her faith in Jesus.

"At the time, if we had waited just one more day to go for that MRI scan, doctors said I would not have made it. This is why I stress you need to listen to your body," she said.

"Signs are important. I only had two of the 30 symptoms.

“But early detection is key which is why regular screening and checks are vital."

Sandra was the fourth member of her family to be diagnosed with colon cancer and she feared the worst.

"I had three close family members who battled cancer and passed away, so I was afraid," she told the crowd.

"During October, we promote breast cancer awareness but for me, I share awareness about colon cancer, because our gut health is one area we all neglect."

She explained that, in December 2020, she fell ill and collapsed in the mall. After being rushed to the doctor, she was diagnosed with colon cancer.

"I underwent surgery and the physical and mental recovery was tough, but with God I persevered with treatments," Sandra stated.

"I encourage everyone to take time to have a colonoscopy done as it is very important.

"There is hope. It all changes in your mind, you have to have faith and

believe."
