In South Africa, 47 people are killed on the roads daily and 17 000 annually because of poor road and public transport infrastructure, a lack of road safety education, and inadequate street lighting the main causes.

This was according to a recent University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Transport study, with Jonsson Workwear coming up with the VIZI Belt to address this.

The company, together with The Jonsson Foundation, plans to give away three million high-visibility belts over the next three years.

These neon orange belts are made from a high-quality, 50mm wide tape which allow wearers to be visible during the day, while the reflective silver strip on the belt increases visibility in low-light conditions.

These belts, which are free of charge at any of the Jonsson Workwear stores nationwide, are fit for any pedestrian activity, whether commuting to school and work, walking a dog, crossing the street, or jogging.

The belts’ versatility allows them to be worn around the waist, over the shoulder, or tied onto a bag.

To elaborate on the organisation’s safety movement, Jonsson Workwear’s CEO and executive chairman, Nick Jonsson said:

"Our road stats are a sombre reminder for all of us to continuously advocate for road safety, which sadly receives minimal attention.

"We would like to raise awareness on this critical topic and aim to empower people to be safe and feel safe as pedestrians.

"We encourage individuals, communities, non-profit organisations, and small businesses to work with us to drive this movement. By working together, we can create a brighter future for SA," Jonsson said.
